Fort Freemont, Lands End, St Hellena Island, South Carolina

Fort Freemont, Lands End, St Helena Island, SC

Fort Fremont was built in 1899 to protect the United States mainland from the gold hungry Spanish during the Spanish American War.  Weapons included the Battery Jesup which had three 10-inch cannons. A concrete trench about 10 inches deep surrounds the top boarder portion of the fort. Fuel was poured into the trench and lit to burn the wicked Europeans as they approached. Many ships, including the USS Texas and USS Maine, made visits just prior to the start of the war. This was the last docking of the USS Maine before she exploded in Cuba.
Today the site is owned by the citizens of Beaufort County. Visitors can explore the tunnels and comb the beaches. Paris Island Marine Training Depot is just across the Port Royal Sound.
The ghost of Land’s End has been seen on more than one occasion waving a lantern. The latest reported sighing was just after 2 AM 21 March 2011. To see the ghost, it is best to visit alone- after midnight.
To get to the site, take Highway 21 out of Beaufort towards the ocean. Turn right on MLK/ Lands End Road when you get to Frogmore, SC. Go about 7 miles and follow the signs.
